Financial Advisor Job Description, Skills, and Salary

Financial Advisor Job Description, Skills, and SalaryFinancial Advisor Job Description, Skills, and SalaryFinancial advisorshelp clients create viable plans for managing their finances relative to individual and family situations. During the early stages of their careers, financial advisors spend considerable time and energy filling out their client rosters by prospecting for new customers. They meet with prospects and try to convince them to sign on as clients. They engage established clients and interview them to assess their risk tolerance and financial goals. Financial advisors recommend a mix of investments including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real estate to help clients reach their goals for college savings, retirement, and wealth building. They recommend an allocation of assets consistent with the risk tolerance of clients and their life stage. Where Financial Advisors Work Financial advisors often work for large financial services businesses, but they may be station ed in small local offices for these firms. Many financial advisors operate their own businesses and work independently or with a few partners. Education, Training, and Certifications Financial advisors need to earn a bachelors degree to qualify for positions. Advisors benefit from coursework in economics, mathematics, finance, investments, accounting, and taxation. Most financial services firms have training programs to equip graduates and career changers with the fundamental knowledge and skills. Financial advisors can enhance their credibility with clients by earning a financial planning certification like the Certified Financial Planner(CFP) designation. While elend required, a masters degree in finance, business administration, or other similar fields often will help with advancement. Financial Advisor Salaries According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS), financial advisors earned an average of $90,640 annually as of 2017. The top 10 percent of financial advisors ea rned at least $208,000while the bottom 10 percent earned less than $40,800. Financial advisors working for investment firms earned higher than average salaries and advisors working for community banks and credit unions tended to earn lower than average salaries. Advisors who are employed by financial services firms often receive bonuses, and that compensation is not included in these figures. Compensation is tied directly to productivity in terms of fees for products sold, assets managed and/or the number of financial plans generated. Since pay and job security are heavily based on performance, there is a high washout rate for new advisors who are unable to meet the challenge of building a viable roster of clients. Skills Necessary In addition to understanding business and finance, analytical skills and people skills are very important for success as a financial advisor. Advisors need to be able to read data, recognize trends, and anticipate where markets are going to be of the most value to their clients. Additionally, advisors need to be likable and trustworthy. Being successful requires building a client base, and doing that involves convincing people that you can be a trusted source for information and direction regarding their investments. No matter how good a financial advisor might be with the numbers, it will be difficult to build a client base without strong people skills. Employment Outlook According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employmentof personal financial advisors is projected to grow 15 percent during the decade ending in2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Factors impacting growth include an aging bevlkerung of retirees in need of help with financial planning and the trend towardself-managedretirement resources in lieu of company-controlled pensions. The expanded use of automated planning resources may limit the growth of opportunities for financial advisors.

These are the Top 50 best places to work for in 2018

These are the Top 50 best places to work for in 2018These are the Top 50 best places to work for in 2018Its summer which means fruchtwein of us are clamoring to get out of the office most of the time. However, if you work for one of these 50 companies that may not be the case. Indeed just released its 50 top-rated workplaces in America annual report and some pretty impressive companies made the cut.Indeed looked at companies that had at least 100 verified employee reviews submitted over the last two years, then compiled the ones (out of72 million employer ratings) that had the most highly rated on overall employee experience. This ranking only looks at larger (at least 5,000 employees), very well-known companies in the Fortune 500 Index.Companies that have a progressive culture, focus on the employee experience and make sure their employees are engaged tend to make the top 10,said Paul Wolfe, senior vice president at Indeed in a company statement. So where does everyone want to work? The company is also focused on perks and benefits, which brings it to the top of the list. While it might appear that the challenges the company has recently faced might deter people, the employees we attract are the type of people that tend to be excited and engaged in those big, complicated problems and would like to solve them, Anthony Harrison, a Facebook spokesperson, said in an interview. And even though Southwest also had a lot of negative news this year, it is still considered a great place to work. And though people may not always appreciat e their experiences with airlines, they are apparently pretty good places to work. Delta Air Lines Inc., andJetBlue AirwaysCorp. also made the Top 10.The full list is included below.Live Nation,eBay, andCBSall made it on to the list for the first time. Bioengineering Blog Simulation at the Crossroads of Engineering and Biology

Bioengineering Blog Simulation at the Crossroads of Engineering and Biology Bioengineering Blog Simulation at the Crossroads of Engineering and Biology Bioengineering Blog Simulation at the Crossroads of Engineering and BiologyWhat sets computational modeling and simulation of medical devices apart from other analyses? It is the same thing that makes them medical their interaction with biology. When running a stress analysis on a device mechanism or a thermal analysis on enclosed electronics, the modeling is the same for medical devices as for other products. But when questioning the interaction with biological tissue, simulations start to take on elements that are unique to medical devices.Consider the following inquiriesWhat laser wavelength and power provide the desired surgical result for our new device concept? How does bone remodeling affect loading of a hip implant over the months and years after surgery? How much more power do we have to supply at the electrosurgery generator i f we increase the size of our deployable electrode by 20 percent? What are the performance expectations in human trials for our device developed using porcine models? Is our sensor placement optimized for the physiological parameter we want to measure? If we change our surgical tool design/manufacturing method/algorithm in order to improve manufacturability, will it change the surgical effect in unintended ways?In order to analyze with simulation tools, every one of these scenarios requires a computational model for its biological materials. Tissue models range from simple to complex from static and isotropic defined materials on one end to nonlinear and partially reversible multiscale linked physical mechanisms accounting for anisotropy in tissue layers and induced biological response (like heat-shock or healing) on the other. Understanding the material science of biological tissue is key as the need for accurate and timely simulations is at the forefront of device design. Arlen Ward, Ph.D. Professional EngineerAnother complicating factor for device design is the variability of material parameters seen not only between but also within patients. Things like age, hydration, disease state, or scar tissue all play a role in tissue variability, and quickly outstrip the relevance of static material properties. The ability of computational modeling and simulation to provide insight into the sensitivity of the result to the expected variability of the multitude of system inputs provides a powerful tool to know if any new design will likely be effective across a wide range of patient populations. As simulation data is included more and more in 510(k) and PMA submissions to the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory bodies, knowledge of key sensitive inputs for the device system will be the new expectation.Defining mathematical models for biological materials and their interaction with medical device designs provides many engineering challenges, but the advantages are well worth it for both medical device companies as well as patients. As computational modeling and simulation are further incorporated into medical device development, the benefit will be safer and more effective treatments, as well as shorter development times.Arlen Ward, Ph.D., P.E., is a Principal Modeling and Simulation Engineer with ordnungsprinzip Insight Engineering LLC, a medical device simulation consultancy.Opinions expressed are the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of ASME.

SMART Supervisory Job Objectives

SMART Supervisory Job ObjectivesSMART Supervisory Job ObjectivesSMART Supervisory Job ObjectivesYesterday I was at US Army Sustainment Command in Davenport, Iowa. I was contracted to teach Executive Core Qualifications writing. But then we started talking about writing NSPS Self-Assessments and Job Objectives (JOs), and this topic was one of great interest.I told the class of supervisors and executives that I had just written two newsletter articles on a technique for writing the job objectives in the SMART format by using a vacancy announcement. They were intrigued, so I showed them my two articles and my analysis of the SMART JOs.I asked the class, How many of you have your JOs written in the SMART format? Nobody raised their hand. They said, We cant figure out how to do it.I admitted that the SMART JOs were hard even for me to write. We started talking about the mandatory Supervisory JO, which is not in the SMART format. I recommended that we take the Supervisory JO and make it SMA RT, just for writing and thinking about your accomplishments. Working At Convoy Convoy was just recognized by LinkedIn as one of the top startups in the nation Watch the video above to get a sneak peek behind the scenes at Convoy, and learn about a few of their favorite things. The best part? Convoy is currently hiringClick here to see all of their available opportunities, and dont forget to press Follow to receive custom job matches, event invitations and mora One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial posi tions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and ind ustrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Converging Challenges With Upside for Finance Teams

Converging Challenges With Upside for Finance TeamsConverging Challenges With Upside for Finance TeamsTwo things can be true and still be in conflict with each other. That statement applies to the top two challenges that many accounting and finance organizations face today meeting regulatory compliance demands and staying up to date with technology.Chief financial officers interviewed for a recent Management Resources survey cited regulatory compliance challenges and keeping pace with technology as the greatest pressure points impacting their finance teams. ansicht issues, if not managed appropriately, can also disrupt operational functions and resources beyond the finance department, affecting an organizations ability to adapt quickly to shifting business demands. However, interestingly, these converging challenges for finance teams can also support potential solutions for each other. Technology can help to ease the burden of compliance work by automating controls and certain activit ies. And regulatory compliance challenges can drive much-needed new tech adoption and innovation in an organizations front and back offices. No pressure, no changeCompliance mandates, from Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) to the General Data Protection regelung (GDPR), are a familiar challenge for companies and have only become more stringent and complex over time. According to Robert Halfs latest Benchmarking Accounting and Finance Functions report, just 2 percent of finance leaders expect their firms compliance burden to decrease in the next few years. More than one-third (38 percent) said they believe it will rise. The resource-intensive nature of maintaining compliance and internal controls was a theme in the latest Benchmarking report. Compliance demands can divert finance teams attention from other activities that add value to the business and help it to grow. But on the positive side, while regulatory compliance challenges can strain a companys operations and resources, they also force org anizations to evaluate their processes and seek new solutions to improve wertmiger zuwachs and productivity.New technology is one of the solutions for alleviating many of the stressors confronting accounting and finance functions. That includes the compliance burden, which regulatory compliance automation (also known as RegTech) can help to ease. Tools that use artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation (RPA) can help companies keep pace with the increasing demands and complexity of compliance requirements. These real-life use case studies illustrate some of the solutions that technology can deliverA financial services organization needed to review its transactions to obtain audit evidence. AI tools helped the company rapidly recalculate an entire years worth of revenue - millions of transactions - which would have been an impossible task using traditional, manual processes. In another instance, a manufacturer needed assistance in adopting the new lease accounting standard. It introduced machine learning technology to augment and streamline its data-abstraction effort.Looking beyond their ability to help solve regulatory compliance challenges, data analytics tools, cloud computing solutions, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and other technologies can all help to transform accounting and finance functions by improving business agility and efficiency. As the Benchmarking report explains, digital transformation efforts are completely changing how many functions, and the businesses they support, operate. The people factor in digital transformationTechnologys value in supporting accounting and finance teams is becoming increasingly clear. But digital transformation in any respect is almost always easier said than done. The array of implementation options, the deployment scale, the required investment and the simple fact that technology is advancing so rapidly can all have a paralyzing effect on decision makers. There is also the people fac tor to consider. Digital transformation initiatives require tech-proficient professionals with specialized knowledge and skills. As the Benchmarking report notes, digital transformation is driving the need for professionals who have experience with data analytics, knowledge of cloud-based systems, experience with ERP systems and more. In todays highly competitive job market, that talent is hard to find, hire and retain.Companies, to ensure they have the skilled resources in place to execute their digital initiatives, may want to consider taking the following three-pronged approach1. Developing internal staffBusinesses can upskill their existing personnel by offering relevant technology training and professional development opportunities, increasing exposure to digital projects, and providing continuing education reimbursement.2. Bringing in external consultantsThe new labor model for finance can provide the staffing agility and flexibility many companies require to succeed in the di gital age. Working with professional staffing and managed services firms provides access to the specialized tech skills needed to support digital transformation projects. These resources can also help firms manage the change and disruption that these initiatives bring.3. Cultivating knowledge transferFinance leaders can drive cross-pollination of technology expertise in their organization by fostering greater collaboration with their IT colleagues and interaction between internal staff and external consultants. For example, unternehmensverbund a post-mortem meeting following the implementation of a new business system is a great way to ensure knowledge transfer and share new learnings.Again, while regulatory compliance challenges and keeping pace with technology can create headaches for accounting and finance teams, they also can help to alleviate those pressures. Technology can help ease the compliance burden, and compliance demands can help spur necessary digital change in an orga nization. It is important for finance leaders to recognize, and take advantage of, the positive link between these two key challenges. They can help their teams and the business to succeed in both a rapidly evolving technology environment and an increasingly complex regulatory compliance landscape.

Increase Healthcare Team Collaboration with New Tech Tools

Increase Healthcare Team Collaboration with New Tech ToolsIncrease Healthcare Team Collaboration with New Tech ToolsIncrease Healthcare Team Collaboration with New Tech Tools ConlanThink of healthcare apps and you probably think of step trackers and calorie counters. But for healthcare teams, apps can be powerful tools to help improve patient care and foster team-based healthcare and collaboration. In medicine, youre not working as an island, says Dr. Andrew Brooks, co-founder and chief medical officer of TigerText, based in Santa Monica, California. Employees have to rely on teamwork in healthcare, interacting with a lot of people throughout the organization as they deliver care. The good news relatively simple technology is helping to improve healthcare delivery and employee engagement. Here are three ways that technology is helping to transform healthcare team collaboration.Foster Communication among ProvidersApps like Whisper, WhatsApp and Snapchat facilitate communication among you ng people. These tools lack the security and privacy guarantees mandated for healthcare technology. But apps that are compliant with regulations such as HIPAA can improve team-based healthcare they also make it easier for providers to securely compare notes on patient cases, images, test results and share other important data from any location using a chatroom-like setting or direct messaging. For example, best practices dictate that doctors contact specialists directly by calling and explaining why they are referring a patient to them, says Kenneth Garay, chief medical officer at Jersey City Medical Center RWJ-Barnabas Health in Jersey City, New Jersey. Yet too often, by the time the referral is called in, the specialist may be on rounds or out of the hospital, unable to take a call. It delays care and lengthens the stay of the patient, Garay says.To help bridge this gap, his organization uses Practice Unite from Uniphy Health, based in Newark, New Jersey. The app authenticates users to communicate and share information in real time. Now I dont have to wait for the specialist to call back. I know it welches sent out and when it was received. If theres no response, I can resend it. Its amazing, he says. The app has helped shorten courses of care and improve care quality. According to one case study, the app improved metrics such as inpatient care delays and length of post-surgical stays, resulting in annual savings of $2 million. Its the best thing since sliced bread, Garay says.Empower Employees to Do BetterAs a service provider, the healthcare industry would score fairly low when it comes to user satisfaction, Brooks says. Now, with increased importance placed on patient satisfaction scores, healthcare organizations are looking to improve the patient experience via employee engagement and empowerment. With collaboration apps, healthcare employers can empower employees to communicate as effectively as workers in other service industries, such as hospitality and r estaurants - and ultimately provide better patient care. These apps can help providers act on patient feedback in real time, creating a better patient experience. With the tablet-based Humm system, for example, users can sign up to receive notifications whenever a patient isnt satisfied. Individual subscriptions may depend on assigned outcomes, says Humm CEO Bernard Briggs. For example, housekeeping will sign up for cleanliness alerts, while a nurse manager might want to sign up for all alerts to see the big picture. This type of real-time feedback can benefit historically siloed departments that were once at odds with each other, says Dr. Michael Bennick, medical director of the patient experience at Yale New Haven Hospital and chairman of Yale New Haven Healths patient experience council. Now, theyre in a healthy competition as they try to see who can do the real-time recovery first when theres opportunity for improvement, Bennick says.Better Staff EngagementBy gauging real-time se ntiment among patients, apps provide an opportunity to give employees a virtual pat on the back - a boon for healthcare providers who dont always intercept positive feedback. For employers who are looking to increase engagement, this level of transparency can be a big boost to the healthcare team. With Humm, discharge surveys (the management equivalent of the exit interview) capture information about how patients rate their experience Briggs says his organization has found that about 70 percent of comments are positive. Before technology was introduced, this information wasnt always tracked or readily available to healthcare employers. Now apps make it easier to quantify and share survey information. At Yale New Haven, Bennick says a dashboard displays encouraging comments to providers. It creates an atmosphere of celebrating the positives, which is useful when people are talking about burnout and a lack of engagement, he says.Being able to respond quickly to feedback and successes has led to quarter-over-quarter improvements in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems measurements, he says.

Making $60K in a first job A third of college graduates expect it

Making $60K in a first job A third of college graduates expect it Making $60K in a first job A third of college graduates expect it College kids just want to get paid. When it comes to the most important factor when figuring out employment in recently released poll data, “good pay” exceeded any other factor by a landslide, with 72% saying that was most important to them.College students are also aiming very high in terms of that salary - with some of them expecting salaries over $60,000 in their very first gig- a level that’s inordinately high for almost every industry. In one question asking how much money college students think they’ll be taking home at their first post-graduation job, 36% said between $40,000-$60,000 yearly,   26% said less than $40,000 yearly, 21% said $60,000-$80,000 yearly, 17% said more than $80,000 per year. But the report highlighted the significance of the amount of respondents who think they’ll be making really big bucks right after school, saying that “the 17 percent of respondents who are expecting to make over $80,000 out of college should begin tempering their expectatio ns so they are not as disappointed. Very few college graduates will make that salary in their first job out of college.”Second to salary: corporate culture The college grads who chose pay placed every other work factor in a distant second.  versus 14% who reported wanting “strong ethical culture,” 8% favoring a “good training program” the most,” and 5% reporting the “other” option, according to data in LendEDU’s Class of 2017 Career Report, which detailed polling results for six questions with college students as respondents, supplied by Whatsgoodly. Money was an ongoing theme, but fear also entered the picture in the report. Students  also revealed what they fear most about post-graduation life, with a whopping 48% dreading “having to pay taxes and set a budget” the most, compared to 26% worrying most about getting a job, 14% saying not being in constant company of friends , and 11% looking forward to “having to get up early five days a week” the least. Men and women want different things after college Data on company culture and other offerings were further broken down by gender. Fifty-two percent of college students said they prefer to have a position with less security in terms of employment, but a greater amount of benefits. On the other end of the spectrum, 48% said they want a greater amount of job security, and fewer perks. More men than women liked having more benefits - 58% of men, compared to 46% of women. In fact, 54% of women liked job security more than perks, while 42% of men did. College students also don’t want to spend a lot of time on office politics. Sixty-two percent of college students would rather be employed in a “collaborative” workspace, compared to 38% who preferred a “competitive” one. Women took the cake in terms of “collaborative” ones, with 66% preferring it, versus 57% of men who did. Conversely, only 34% of women and 43% of men were in favor of “competitive” ones. College kids also have preferences when it comes to the size and type of employer they want to work for. Bigger, “more established” businesses were highly favored at 69% versus 31% who would want to be employed at a “very small startup.” Seventy-two percent of women and 65% men were in favor or the former, while 35% of men and 28% of women were in favor of the latter. The pursuit of money after college It’s easy to see why the idea of graduation can strike fear in the hearts of many college kids. Everyone’s journey to employment and building wealth is different- some will find it harder to enter the job market after college than others in the months that follow, which can deliver a rush of anxiety to those who take a little longer to get started on their next professional chapter. Joe O’Boyle offers budgeting advice in for recent grads on TIME’s Money website. “A good starting place for your monthly budget can be easily remembered as ’50-30-20.’ When you receive your first paycheck, sit down and figure out what your monthly take home pay will be. Out of that, put 50% toward needs such as rent, utilities, and groceries. Thirty percent goes toward “wants” such as shopping, entertainment, restaurants, and fun. The final 20% goes to your savings and debt repayment. If your student loans are substantial, you may have to flip the percentages so that 30% goes towards debt repayment and 20% toward wants. By following this plan, you can quickly put a dent in those loans,” Boyle writes. So it’s not just the young: feverish pursuit of money is frequently on the brain for new grads and older grads alike.

Affordable Skill Development Options for Creative Professionals

Affordable Skill Development Options for Creative Professionals Affordable Skill Development Options for Creative Professionals Skill development is a must for creative professionals who want to stay relevant, secure plum assignments, and earn a higher salary or promotion. Worried your skills will become obsolete? It can be challenging to get the right training â€" or any training â€" on the job. Thirty-two percent of more than 400 advertising and marketing hiring decision makers surveyed by The Creative Group said their company provides some training, but not necessarily on the most relevant topics. Nine percent said their firms provide little or no training or skills development options. In the same survey, advertising and marketing hiring decision makers said the most challenging aspects of keeping their creative and marketing employees’ skills up to date is finding time for employees to participate in training and identifying appropriate skills development options. What do these stats mean for creative professionals? For one, the onus is on you to get the skills development you need. Here are five affordable skill development options: 1. On-the-job training Institutional knowledge is a big asset for any company, and cross-training is one way to take advantage of it. If you know colleagues who have mastered skills you’d like to learn, find out if they would be willing to give you a few pointers. Or, approach your manager about setting up something more formal, like a brown-bag series where employees can learn from experts from within or outside the company during the lunch hour. In addition to expanding your knowledge base, you’ll build camaraderie with your peers, which can boost morale, aid conflict-resolution and make solving problems easier. 2. Mentoring Many creative professionals know the value of having a mentor, but it can be difficult to figure out how to find and approach one. A mentor can be someone in your department, from another department or outside your company. Think about the type of skills you want to acquire to help pinpoint prospective candidates. We can help you get your next job: SUBMIT YOUR RESUME 3. Traditional classes Getting a degree can be time consuming and expensive, but you shouldn’t shy away from academia. Find out if a nearby university offers a certificate program or allows students to take classes without pursuing a degree. If you want to learn a specific skill, like coding or UI design, consider enrolling in a workshop. Even attending a one-day training event can set you on the right course. Finally, don’t forget to inquire about your company’s tuition reimbursement policy. 4. E-learning If you’re too busy to attend in-person classes or none are available in your city, e-learning can be a good alternative. This approach to skill development allows you to listen to lectures, chat with classmates, submit coursework and meet with instructors without leaving your home or office. Some companies, like CreativeLive, Envato Tuts+ and The Creative Group, even offer free courses. MOOCs, or massive open online courses, are another option for those who want to learn at their own pace. Sites like MOOClist.com offer MOOCs on everything from Photoshop to web development to design thinking. 5. Webinars and YouTube   If you’re truly strapped for time, consider registering for a webinar once or twice each quarter. Many are less than an hour and can be viewed live or on demand. You can even search YouTube at your leisure. Companies (like LinkedIn Learning), organizations (like AIGA and TED Talks), and industry enthusiasts post informational and inspirational videos regularly.

12 Ways to Make Sure Your Resume Gets Seen

12 Ways to Make Sure Your Resume Gets Seen 12 Ways to Make Sure Your Resume Gets Seen Moreover, the deck is stacked against your resume. The average company receives 75 resumes for each of its open positions,  according to CareerBuilder, and the average recruiter  spends no more than six seconds  looking at a resume before they decide to pass on it or move forward with the candidate.  This is to say nothing of the dreaded applicant tracking system, which uses its semi-accurate-at-best filter system to  disqualify 75 percent of the candidates  for  any given position. As a job seeker, then, you have a lot of competition, very little time to make a good impression, and at least one fickle  gatekeeper standing in your resumes way. The good news, however, is that all hope is not lost. There are a few things 12, in fact that you can do to boost your resumes chances of being seen by an employer. These tips come from Art Koff, the founder of  RetiredBrains.com. 1. Did You List Your Cellphone Number for Contact? Recruiters and employers arent going to bother with candidates whom they cannot contact. If your phone number is missing, expect your resume to head straight into the waste basket. Koff suggests a cellphone number in particular because its often easier to reach someone via cellphone than it is to reach them via landline. Dont make an employer work just to track you down! Also, Koff notes that job seekers should make sure there is a professional voicemail message on their cellphones. A jokey answer message could send employers running in the opposite direction. 2.  Did You Make Sure Your Email Address Is Appropriate for Business? Hokey and fun email addresses can cut you out of the interviewing process, says Koff. Employers wont look kindly on unprofessional email addresses. What does an email address like Partymonster27 say about you as a person? Nothing very good, thats for sure. 3. Are You Using Cliches in Your Job Summaries? Most  ATSs use keyword systems to filter candidates from the running. If your resume uses generic keywords like results-oriented, self-motivated, or dynamic, theres a good chance that a companys ATS will disqualify you,  according to Koff. Better to use [specific] words from the job description or posting [to which you are applying], Koff says. 4. Were You Self-Employed? If So, Were You Specific About What You Did? When it comes to self-employment, employers really want to see concrete, detailed descriptions of the projects youve done. Koff suggests going a step further and also including the names of some of your highest-profile clients with their permission, of course. 5. How Much Information Did You Include About Jobs You Had Very Early In Your Career? Anything other than the names of companies and the dates you worked there is overkill, says Koff and you may not even need that information at all. Unless a very early job is particularly relevant to the job you are applying for, Koff suggests you keep it simple or cut it altogether. 6. Did You Include Your Familiarity With Specialized Equipment? Do you know a lot about certain operating systems, technologies, tools, softwares, etc.? Then be sure to mention that clearly! 7. Did You Include Any Volunteer Work or Charitable Activities? Employers like to see volunteer work on your resume. As Kara Montermoso of Idealist.org  tells Monster, Volunteer work, whether in addition to a current job or an activity in between jobs, shows an employer that you are willing to try new experiences [and are involved in your community, and [it] generally demonstrates a willingness to take initiative and make things happen. 8. Did You List the Specific Core Competencies of Your Job Function and Industry? As mentioned above, ATSs dont like generic keywords. No, these softwares and the employers that use them want to see specific, highly relevant language that directly relates to the job and industry. At the same time, Koff notes, job seekers need to be very careful about how they phrase these core competencies. Dont include words like responsible for or duties included, Koff says. Instead, use language like managed or oversaw.  Recruiters and hiring managers react better to this terminology. 9. Did You Minimize Descriptions of Tasks and Maximize Descriptions of Accomplishments? This is what employers and recruiters are really interested: not the daily duties  of your job, but the overarching and lasting positive impacts you had in your role. 10. Did You Quantify Your Accomplishments? Dont just describe your accomplishments in vague terms. Use dollars and percentages to quantify your achievements. Use numbers whenever possible, Koff says. If you can support this information with charts and graphs, do so. 11. Did You Create a Text-Only Version of Your Resume? Your resume is going to end up in a lot of weird programs, and fancy formatting will often get destroyed in the process. This can lead to unreadable resumes, which employers wont hesitate to toss. Therefore, Koff suggests that you always keep a text-only version of your resume on hand. This will preserve the formatting when uploading into a company text box, Koff explains. Word documents dont format  properly when placed in a text box. 12. Did You Include a Cover Letter? Your  cover letter may never get read, but including one shows an employer that you put time and effort into your application. Plus, in case the cover letter  does  get read, you can use it to your advantage. Your cover letter can serve to better relate your experience to the job to which you are applying, Koff explains. Your resume has to clear a lot of hurdles before it gets read, but if you follow these 12 tips each time you send out a resume, youll give yourself a much better shot at getting seen.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. The Foundation of Winning Leadership

The Foundation of Winning Leadership The Foundation of Winning Leadership Are you a winning leader? Use these tips to become one.Few of us are born leaders. Many shy away from the job. And even more lack the dedication and passion it takes to mold and mentor a team of multifaceted talents. There are several reasons why certain professionals avoid management positions, or why management positions seem to avoid them altogether. While management isn’t for everyone, the leadership skills embraced by affluent, senior-level executives can translate to the success of any employee.Interested in improving your leadership skills? Check out these five behaviors and habits of successful leaders that will better the leadership quality of any professional.Know your objective and execute accordingly Adept leaders envision what they want their team to achieve in both the long and short term and execute with velocity. If you want to be a successful leader, it’s vital you lead by example. Show those under you proper problem-solving techniques and teach them skills that will help them improve in the long run. It’s your responsibility to drive everyone towards the common goal of generating/improving business. However, it’s also important for successful leaders to keep up team morale. Regardless of how lofty the goal may be project-to-project, instill confidence in your team by celebrating both small and big victories.Establish an environment of effective communication Successful leaders know that low levels of trust between employees and management lead to costly mistakes, slower execution and reduced innovation. That’s why effective communication is imperative. Winning leaders make sure their team knows the overarching plan and trusts them to do their job. They respect the opinions of all employees and understand that micromanagement reduces trust between all parties. However, effective communication doesn’t solely apply to professional matters. It is important for successful leaders to also communicate with their employees on a personal level. Take the time to explore the interests of your team and what their hobbies are outside of work. You might discover these employees possess skills unrelated to their job description your company would be wise to utilize.Practice precise time investmentEffective leaders invest their time where there is the most return on investment. It’s important to have a clear and compelling understanding as to which business segments will provide the greatest ROI and which, if any, drag the team down. They judge each employee based on performance and cut ties when they are involved in a losing hand.Embrace risk, loss and failureLeaders are not afraid to fail. In fact, they encourage calculated risk taking. Successful leaders view failure as one step closer to success, as opposed to allowing setbacks to mentally discourage them.Never be afraid to try new ideas that have the potential to fail. Risks often drive rewards and taking calculated risks at a senior level will encourage those you lead to take more risks in their careers. You never know what innovation this may result in!Stay disciplined Winning leaders do everything within their ability not to get sidetracked, lose interest and settle into bad habits. What propels some to the next level is strict discipline and unrelenting drive to not only improve oneself, but others as well. They make a habit of excellence and ensure everyone else remains on course. While leaders come in all different shapes, sizes and experience levels, they all channel their energy to improve themselves and others while consistently striving to meet the highest standards. Implement these skills into your business strategy and become a better leader today!

The Toughest Interview Question and How to Answer It

The Toughest Interview Question and How to Answer It The Toughest Interview Question and How to Answer It “Tell me about yourself.” This one simple little question makes even the most confident candidates sweat in a job interview. A million thoughts rush through your mind: What exactly should I share? Should I try to build rapport? should I show I’m perfect for the job? Never fear, job seeker. There is a very simple formula that will help you easily answer this question. Here’s how to answer “Tell me about yourself”: The first thing to remember is this isn’t an invitation to recite your entire life story or to go through each bullet point listed on your resume. This is your first and best opportunity to pitch the recruiter on why you are perfect for the position. First, you should start with the present because that’s where you are now. Then you can segue into your past (but not too far) and tell them a little about the experiences you have had and the skills gained in your previous position. Wrap it up by talking about the future, and why you’re really excited about this particular opportunity. Let’s look at an example: You could respond to the question like this: “At my current position as an account executive with Smith Company, I solely managed three of our top performing clients. Before that, I handled two different major national accounts at an ad agency. While I really enjoyed the work at both places, I’d love to explore the opportunities in management with one specific company. And that’s why I am so excited about this opportunity with Jones Corporation.” Throughout your reply, remember to focus on experiences and skills that will be the most relevant for a hiring manager when they think about filling this particular position within the company. Don’t be afraid to relax a little, tell a few stories and maybe a joke (just keep it clean). They already have your resume but now they want to know a little more about you! How do you relax? Don’t speak too fast Stop yourself from shaking (squeeze your buttocks or thigh muscles â€" sounds weird but it works) Stop your voice from shaking (do some vocal exercises before you go into the interview) Stand up while you wait but don’t pace Find your best sitting position Show your hands (place your hands on the table during the interview) Make the other person feel special by being genuinely interested in what they have to say Listen to hear, not to respond Use your own voice, not some formal public speaking voice Be yourself Remember, you’re already on the shortlist! You made it to an interview, so they already think highly of you. Just slow down, listen and be yourself. If you do that, you’ll come across as confident, authentic and relaxed.

Survey Millennials more stressed than older colleagues

Survey Millennials more stressed than older colleagues Survey Millennials more stressed than older colleagues Stress does not get evenly distributed at work, a new survey of 4,500 people from the Mental Health Foundation has found.  Turns out, age makes a significant difference in whether you find the workplace an oasis or a stressful nightmare.Survey: Millennials more stressed than baby boomersTwenty-seven percent of millennials said that stress often bothered them at work, compared to the 12% of baby boomers that said the same. Millennials were the group most likely to have stress interfere with their work. About a third of millennials (34%) said that they felt stress made them less productive, while only 19% of their older colleagues felt the same. Why do millennials feel so stressed out? Increasingly insecure job prospects and overwhelming workloads, MHF believes.“Millennials are more likely to have insecure contracts, low rates of pay and high entry-level workloads. The pressures they face in today’s employment market are very different to past generations,” MHF’s Richard Grange said.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for  Morning Motivation! It’s our friendly Facebook robot that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started!Millennials did share one anxiety with their older colleagues - the fear that they could talk to no one at work about it. Across the generations surveyed, only 14% of employees said they were comfortable talking to their manager about their stress. If we want to break the silence around mental health struggles, it would begin with managers communicating that it is okay to talk about it.“If everybody from upper management to bottom management engages in a practice where they’re openly talking about their mental health problems, then it sends a message to the entire community [that] it’s OK to talk about these issues,” Theresa Nguyen, vice president of policy and programs at Mental Health America, advises. “The goal is to allow people to feel like they can talk about this earlier instead of waiting ’til it’s a problem.”

Why wont everyone listen to Elon Musk about the robot apocalypse

Why won't everyone listen to Elon Musk about the robot apocalypse Why won't everyone listen to Elon Musk about the robot apocalypse When Elon Musk is not the billionaire CEO running three companies, he has a side hustle as our greatest living prophet of the upcoming war between humans and machines. In his latest public testimony about the dark future that awaits us all, Musk urged the United Nations to ban artificially intelligent killer robots. And he and other fellow prophets emphasized that we have no time. No time.In an open letter  to the U.N., Musk, along with 115 other experts in robotics, co-signed a grim future where artificial superintelligence would lead to “lethal autonomous weapons” that would bring the “third revolution in warfare.”And to add some urgency to the matter, the letter said that this future wasn’t a distant science fiction, it was a near and present danger.“Once developed, they will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend,” the letter states. “We do not have long to act. Once this Pandora’s box is opened, it will be hard to close.”Although lethal autonomous weapons are not mainstream yet, they do already exist. Samsung’s SGR-A1 sentry robot is reportedly used by the South Korean army to monitor the Korean Demilitarized Zone with guns capable of autonomous firing.  Taranis, an “unmanned combat air vehicle,” is being developed by the U.K. So autonomous weapons are already here. It remains to be seen, however, if this brings a new World War.Elon Musk keeps telling you thisThis is not the first time Musk has sounded the alarm on machines taking over. Here’s a look at all the ways Musk has tried to convince humanity of its impending doom. And he hasn’t been mild in his warnings. If you’re going to get people to pay attention to your robot visions, you need to raise the stakes. That’s what Musk did when he told  Massachusetts Institute of Technology students in 2014 that artificial intelligence was “our biggest existential threat.” And in case he didn’t get t he students’ attention there, Musk compared artificial intelligence research to a metaphor of Good and Evil.“With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon, in all those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, it’s like yeah he’s sure he can control the demon. Didn’t work out,” Musk said.So what can humans use as prayer beads against these robotic demons? Musk thinks that we’ll need to use artificial intelligence to beat artificial intelligence. In a Vanity Fair profile of his artificial intelligence ambitions, Musk said that “the human A.I. collective” could beat rogue algorithms that could arise with artificial superintelligence. We’re going to become robots’ house catsIf you’re not sold with A.I. being an existential threat to humanity, are you more alarmed when you consider a world where our robot overlords treat us like pets? This is an argument Musk tried in 2017.When Musk founded his brain-implant company, Neurali nk, in 2017, he needed to explain why developing a connection between brains and machines was necessary. As part of this press tour, he talked with Wait But Why about the background behind his latest company and the existential risk we’re facing with artificial intelligence.“We’re going to have the choice of either being left behind and being effectively useless or like a pet - you know, like a house cat or something - or eventually figuring out some way to be symbiotic and merge with AI,” Musk told the blog. “A house cat’s a good outcome, by the way.”Musk meant that being housecats for the demonic robot overlords is the best possible outcome, of course. But it’s also worth considering that housecats are not only well-treated and largely adored, but also, by acclamation, came to dominate the internet. Humanity could do worse. If we can’t beat them, we’ll have to join themOur impending irrelevance means we’ll have to become cyborgs to stay useful to this world, according to Musk. While computers can communicate at a “a trillion bits per second,” Musk has said, we flawed humans are built with much slower bandwidths - our puny brains and sluggish fingers- that process information more slowly. We will need to evolve past this to stay useful. To do this, humans and robots will need to form a “merger” so that we can “achieve a symbiosis between human and machine intelligence, and maybe solves the control problem and the usefulness problem,” Musk told an audience at the World Government Summit in Dubai in 2017, according to CNBC.In other words, one day in the future, humans will have to join forces with artificial intelligence to keep up with the times or become the collared felines Musk fears we’ll become without intervention.Musk’s warnings are only being slowly heardWhat will it take for our robot prophet to be heard, so that his proclamations don’t keep falling on deaf ears?Although Musk may seem like a minority opinion no w, his ideas around the threat of artificial intelligence are becoming more mainstream. For instance, his idea has been widely adopted that we are living right now in a computer simulation staged by future scientists.Although Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg disagrees with Musk’s dark future, more tech leaders are siding with Musk when it comes to killer robots. Alphabet’s artificial intelligence expert, Mustafa Suleyman, was one of the U.N. open letter’s signatories. In the past, Bill Gates has said that the intelligence in A.I. “is strong enough to be a concern.”https://twitter.com/MoniFierce/status/900387643636289538So we can laugh now at these outlandish science fiction worlds where we’re robots’ domestic pets. But Musk has been sounding the alarm for years and he has held firm to his beliefs. What may be one man’s outlier theory now may become a reality in the future. If nothing else, he’s making sure you listen.

Hired! New Opportunities in Charitable Corner of Finance

Hired! New Opportunities in Charitable Corner of Finance Hired! New Opportunities in Charitable Corner of Finance Hedge fund manager finds new opportunity in microfinanceBear Stearns first groaned under the weight of bad investments in June 2007 - the first signs the investment bank would ultimately collapse. But inside the 83-year-old institution, one of the largest and seemingly strongest financial houses in the world, Ron Dadina, managing director of the International Debt Capital Markets Group, was confident the company would hold.“I was not in the Mortgage CDO group. I was very much in the emerging-markets group, and we were doing well,” the FinanceLadder member recalled. “We had a good plan of deals, so I thought we would weather the storm and things would be OK a few months down the line. But unfortunately, it was not the case.”Bear Sterns collapsed in March 2008 after months of bruising deficits tied to losses in the Mortgage CDO ( collateralized debt obligations ) group, and the company was acquired by JP Morgan Chase for less than 10 percent of its peak value. JP Morgan Chase would eventually initiate deep layoffs, including Dadina, who was let go in June when prospects looked most bleak for the unemployed in the finance industry.Despite a competitive job market, Dadina found work and a more personally rewarding livelihood as the managing director and senior credit officer at Minlam Asset Management LLC. This New York investment firm puts a unique twist on microfinance, one corner of the financial sector that is still performing well. Microfinance funds are for-profit organizations that make small, low-interest loans for no collateral to needy groups or individuals, usually in emerging markets. Minlan manages a hedge fund that invests client’s funds in microfinance engagements. It provides financial solutions for emerging markets, where Dadina is able to capitalize on his previous experience as someone able to structure and manage comprehensive deals. It’s a job he never considered, and his was a pedigree Minlam never pursued, but a recruiter paired t hem. His experience turned out to be what Minlam needed, and microfinance afforded Dadina a safe room amid collapsing financial houses. “There are many wealthy individuals who want to invest money,” Dadina said. “They are not donating money: they want to invest money and make a good return, but at the same time it has a social aspect to it.” This, according to Dadina, places Minlam in a “sweet spot.”Crowded marketWhen Dadina, of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., entered the job market in June, he encountered a crowded pool of job seekers and few jobs. He applied for one job at the World Bank, where he was told more than 1,000 candidates had applied and only 12, including Dadina, were interviewed. “For any job these days, there are not just a few dozen but hundreds of people applying,” he said. “There are times when things are tough and you feel like you are never going to get a job. But if you keep at it, it will come to pass.”Finding the right job is seldom a straight line, he said.“The main thing is to explore every opportunity,” he said. “Don’t leave any stone unturned in terms of finding a job. Thing s come to a head. For it to build up, it takes time. But once you have the momentum going, once you try to corner things from different angles, there comes a point in time when things work out.”Dadina discussed job-search avenues with friends who suggested career Web sites specializing only in financial careers. As a MBA graduate of The University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, he enrolled on the university’s Web site and several sites for Chartered Financial Analyst and the Emerging Markets Association. He joined FinanceLadder and almost missed the job at Minlam.“I did not see the ad for this job. I had missed it,” he said. Instead, the firm found Dadina on FinanceLadder and began a months-long, exhaustive application process.Minlam had received 237 applications for the position and was already considering another candidate with experience in microfinance, something he lacked.“Before me, they had interviewed quite a few candidates â€" they told me that they had had an exhaustive process. So I was probably among the last few that they were seeing.” Several meetings with other partners, the CEO and the London office followed as well as a detailed background check and a psychological test. “So it was a very intensive process. There were calls or meetings every other day for about two weeks. But all along they moved quickly.”What impressed Minlam despite Dadina’s lack of microfinance experience was the breadth of his experience in emerging markets. For 15 years Dadina has led emerging-market debt transactions from start to finish, a process that includes analyzing the client company, meeting management, doing the necessary due diligence, preparing underwriting reports, structuring the deal, making sure all the covenants are in place and preparing the required legal documentation.“[Minlam] was looking for someone with experience to run with a deal from start to finish: someone who has the loan documentation and the credit experience, someone who has the emerging background and understanding, someone who has done due diligence in a variety of countries,” he said. “So in terms of my background and experience, it fit very well.” “They are a young firm of only about a year old,” he said. “They have significant growth plans, so they are looking to me to implement all the systems and procedures and to take care of all the credit and investment activities.”Minlam has a unique product and business model Dadina said he considers very attractive to many institutions abroad. The company offers local currency financing to these institutions, so they are able to receive financing in the same currency as the original assets.“There are many government and non-government agencies that provide hard-currency financing,” he said. “So basically, if a small local institution in another country receives dollars or euros, they are providing the money to the local borrowers in local currency. So that is a big risk issue, and Minlam takes that risk.”Minlam has a good handful of investors and expects more capital, he said.“They expect to raise more funding this quarter. And they also have support from some govern ment agencies who have agreed to provide them with funding,” he said. “I think that they are well connected with the right channels.”

The Importance of Being Authentic

The Importance of Being Authentic The Importance of Being Authentic There is a lot of talk these days about how job seekers can market themselves and build a personal brand and, a phrase I often use, communicate their value proposition. All of this can sound intimidating when youre faced with finding a job in a tough job market. Believe me I know Ive been there. Ive been thinking about this a lot after seeing a really great concert last week. The artist in question is a young Scottish singer-songwriter who is currently touring the US. His name is Paolo Nutini and his music is hard to describe because his latest album is an eclectic mix of reggae, bluegrass, acoustic folky stuff, a little bit of rock And as a performer, hes even harder to sum up. Hes not fashionably dressed. Hes a terrible dancer. He spends most of the show hunched over in an odd posture, and he rarely makes eye contact with the audience in fact he spent most of his New York concert with his eyes closed. So weird is his performance style that one woman mistakenly thought he had been drinking. I overheard her telling her friend I would have enjoyed it a lot better if he hadnt been so drunk. And yet the show was magnetic! It was the most fun Ive had at a concert in a long, long time. Why? I think its because the music and the performance was just absolutely 100% authentic. Paolo was completely in tune with his songs and he and his band exuded joy. That joy was magnified by an audience that felt the authenticity and returned it. More and more I am working on capturing this spirit when working with my clients. When I first started resume writing, I did it like everyone else. I wrote resumes the way I saw everyone else do it. My resumes were good, but could have come from 10 other resume writing services. But now thats not the case. Because instead of trying to squeeze my clients histories into a template, I am focusing on their individuality. On what makes them authentically different from everyone else. And, having identified their unique personal value, Im structuring the resume to fully communicate it. It makes my job much more fun than it used to be, and results in resumes that cant help but stand out from the rest. If youre currently looking for work, take a long look at your resume and cover letters and see if they capture whats uniquely you. And to get Monday morning started off the right way, heres a shot of Paolo Nutini.
